3D printing’s expanding role in the military

Metal additive manufacturing is increasingly finding its way into the defense industry and the armed forces worldwide. It’s crucial for the repair or maintenance of equipment, shortening lead times of traditional supply chains, and for field deployment, producing parts directly in the field.

Meltio, a metal additive manufacturing company based in Linares, Spain, is dedicated to developing industrial 3D metal printing using DED technology with metal wire—no powder is used, meaning the head melts a spool of metal wire with lasers to create or repair the metal part layer by layer. Meltio has manufactured replacement parts made of stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel, Inconel, and other validated materials for the defense and aerospace industries and has collaborated with different NATO and South Korean armies on the repair of jet engines using titanium and copper alloys, with its main solution for repairing and manufacturing metal parts, the Meltio Robot Cell.
